Kettle on Grand owner Givino Rossini says the city's Grand Avenue redevelopment project cost him thousands of dollars in lost revenue. He received only one week's notice before construction began, leaving him scrambling to adjust his operations. The project, which aims to revitalize the downtown corridor, has instead created a financial nightmare for many local merchants.
Rossini described the sudden disruption as devastating. With little warning, he had to reroute customer access and deal with constant noise and dust. Foot traffic dropped sharply as sidewalks were torn up and parking spaces disappeared. For a small business like his, even a few days of reduced sales can be hard to recover from.
Other shop owners along Grand Avenue report similar struggles. Some say they were not given enough time to inform regulars or to plan for the inevitable slowdown. The construction has dragged on longer than expected, compounding the financial strain. Several businesses have had to cut staff hours or dip into personal savings just to stay afloat.
City officials have defended the project, arguing that long-term improvements will eventually bring more visitors and investment to the area. But for now, the immediate pain is hard to ignore. Rossini and his neighbors are left wondering if they can survive the construction long enough to see those benefits. The redevelopment may promise a brighter future, but for the small businesses on Grand Avenue, the present is a daily battle for survival.
