Guest column: Louisiana’s broadband strategy is helping businesses compete

Every Louisiana business depends on reliable internet service, whether it is processing payments, managing inventory, communicating with customers or supporting employees. Broadband access now directly affects productivity, customer service, operating costs and the ability to compete in an increasingly digital economy. For years, many Louisiana communities dealt with limited internet options, inconsistent service and high prices. That reality put small-town retailers and rural manufacturers at a clear disadvantage against competitors in better-connected areas.

The state's recent broadband strategy has started to change that picture. Instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Louisiana focused on mapping actual coverage gaps and targeting funding to the places that needed it most. This meant fiber lines reached remote corners of the state where private providers had little incentive to build. The result is not just faster downloads for residents. It means a family-owned hardware store in a small parish can now run cloud-based inventory software, process card payments without lag, and offer video customer support. A farm equipment dealer can upload repair manuals and order parts in real time. A local accounting firm can securely share large files with clients in Baton Rouge or beyond.

Beyond speed, the push has helped stabilize operating costs. When businesses no longer have to pay a premium for spotty satellite service or rely on cellular hotspots, they can reinvest that money into hiring or upgrading equipment. Reliable broadband also makes it easier for companies to attract younger talent who expect seamless connectivity at work. In a state where many communities are fighting to keep their main streets alive, this strategy gives local entrepreneurs a fighting chance to hold their own against big-box retailers and out-of-state competitors. The work is not finished, but the foundation is solid.
