A major water main break in Oakland County has left a stretch of local businesses scrambling, with closures that have puzzled both owners and customers. While it makes sense that restaurants, which rely on water for cooking, dishwashing, and sanitation, had to lock their doors, the shutdown of retail stores and a music shop has raised eyebrows.
The break, which occurred early Tuesday morning, flooded a key section of the commercial district and cut off water pressure to several blocks. Without running water, health codes and basic operational needs forced a wide range of businesses to close. For a music store, the reason was less about hygiene and more about fire safety. Without water pressure, fire suppression systems are nonfunctional, meaning any spark from an amplifier or electrical equipment could turn into a disaster. Similarly, clothing boutiques and gift shops cannot operate without working restrooms for employees or the ability to clean spills.
Local officials say repairs could take up to 48 hours, leaving shop owners to calculate lost revenue. One retailer noted that while insurance might cover physical damage, it rarely covers the loss of a full day's sales. The county has set up a temporary water station for residents, but for the businesses, the wait continues.
