Business Email Compromise, or BEC, has been a thorn in the side of finance teams for years. But the old tricks of fake invoices and spoofed domains are looking almost primitive next to what is happening now. Criminals have traded their clumsy phishing nets for precision-guided AI weapons, and the financial damage is climbing into the billions each quarter.
The shift is not subtle. Instead of sending out thousands of generic emails hoping one sticks, attackers now use artificial intelligence to study a target company for days. They learn who approves payments, what time the CFO usually travels, and how the vendor writes their emails. Then they strike with a perfectly timed request, written in the exact tone of a trusted executive. The victim does not get a sloppy message full of typos. They get a calm, urgent note that fits right into their inbox flow.
What makes this new wave so dangerous is the voice and video layer. A finance manager might get a call from the CEO's number, hear a familiar voice asking for a wire transfer, and even see a face on a video call that looks like the boss. Deepfake audio and real-time face swapping have made it possible to impersonate someone for a few crucial minutes. The human ear and eye are no longer reliable verification tools.
The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center has logged staggering losses, with adjusted annual figures often exceeding three billion dollars. Small and mid-sized firms are hit just as hard as large corporations, because they tend to have thinner security layers and less cross-training among staff.
Protection now has to start with process, not just software. Companies need a strict rule that any payment change or new vendor request must be confirmed through a separate channel, like a face-to-face meeting or a callback to a known number. But even that callback is not safe unless the employee hangs up and dials a number they have used before, rather than trusting caller ID. Multi-factor authentication on email accounts is a must, but so is a simple culture of slowing down. The AI can fake the voice, but it cannot fake a second opinion. If a request feels urgent and secret, that is exactly when the alarm bells should ring.
