Customers Are Getting More AI Than They Can Put To Work, Survey Finds

Software vendors are pushing out artificial intelligence features faster than most organizations can actually use them, according to a new industry survey. The gap between what AI products offer and what customers can realistically deploy is widening, and the findings suggest the problem is not with the technology itself but with how it is being introduced.

The report, based on responses from hundreds of IT leaders and business managers, found that a majority of companies have access to advanced AI tools such as generative assistants, automated data analysis, and predictive workflow systems. Yet fewer than one in three say their teams have integrated those features into daily operations. Many respondents admitted they activate only a small fraction of the AI capabilities included in their existing software subscriptions.

The main barrier is not cost or technical complexity, the survey says. It is organizational readiness. Employees lack training, internal processes have not been redesigned around AI, and managers are unsure which tasks should be automated first. One respondent described the situation as "having a race car in the garage but no track to drive it on."

The report argues that vendors share the blame. Many release features with minimal guidance, assuming customers will figure out use cases on their own. That approach creates a cycle of underuse and frustration. The researchers recommend a shift toward co-development, where vendors work directly with customer teams to identify high-value workflows and build custom prompts or integrations. Early pilots show that companies using this collaborative model see adoption rates more than double within six months.

The takeaway is clear: the next wave of AI value will not come from shipping more features. It will come from helping the people who already have those features learn to use them well. Vendors that treat deployment as a shared project, not a handoff, will likely win the loyalty of customers who are currently overwhelmed.
