Some parents second-guessed my choice to let my 10-year-old take public transportation alone in Washington, DC. However, I am glad I made that decision. Allowing my daughter to navigate the bustling transit system has not only fostered her independence but has also significantly boosted her confidence.
Initially, I was apprehensive about her traveling alone, considering the potential risks and challenges. However, after discussing safety protocols and practicing her route together, I felt reassured. Each day, she embarks on her journey with enthusiasm, mastering the art of reading schedules and understanding the various transit lines.
This experience has taught her valuable life skills, such as problem-solving and time management. She has learned to interact with strangers, ask for help when needed, and navigate through diverse environments. Watching her grow into a more self-sufficient individual has been incredibly rewarding, reaffirming my belief in the importance of fostering independence in children.
