TripGain Releases 'State of Business Travel in India 2026' Report, Revealing Persistent Gaps Between Digital Adoption and Operational Reality

Conventional wisdom suggests corporate travel technology is primarily about reducing costs and automating bookings. However, a new industry study from TripGain suggests something far more significant is happening. The "State of Business Travel in India 2026" report reveals a persistent and troubling gap between the rapid adoption of digital tools and the messy operational reality that travelers and managers face every day.

The report, based on survey data from over 500 corporate travel managers and frequent business travelers across India, finds that while 78 percent of companies now use some form of digital booking platform, only 34 percent report that these tools actually integrate smoothly with their expense reporting and approval workflows. This disconnect forces employees to manually re-enter data, reconcile receipts, and chase approvals, undermining the very efficiency that technology was supposed to deliver.

TripGain's analysis highlights a deeper issue: many organizations are layering new apps and portals onto outdated policies and fragmented approval chains. Travelers are often left to navigate a maze of preferred vendors, price caps, and compliance rules that the software cannot enforce in real time. The result is a system that looks modern on the surface but still relies on spreadsheets, emails, and phone calls to function.

The study also points to a growing frustration among business travelers. Nearly half of respondents said they sometimes bypass corporate booking tools entirely, opting to book directly with airlines or hotels to avoid cumbersome processes. This behavior, known as "leakage," not only undermines negotiated rates but also creates blind spots for finance teams trying to track spending.

TripGain's report concludes that the next phase of corporate travel technology in India must focus not on adding more features, but on closing the gap between what digital tools promise and what they actually deliver. Without fixing the underlying operational friction, the industry risks investing in solutions that only create new problems.
