City of Palms new downtown parking program: How local business react to the change

The Fort Myers City Council has given the green light to a new parking program for downtown, changing the rates at all three of the city's parking garages. Previously, visitors could park for one hour free before the hourly rate kicked in. Under the new rules, that free window has been doubled to two hours. After that, the standard hourly fee applies.

Local business owners and managers are largely in favor of the shift. Many say the extra hour gives people more time to stroll beneath the royal palms, grab a bite, and browse the shops without feeling rushed. One manager noted that it takes the pressure off customers who might otherwise cut their visit short to avoid paying for parking.

But not everyone is fully satisfied. One general manager pointed out that while the two-hour grace period helps, it does not solve a deeper issue that has been brewing for years. The real problem, they argued, is not the price of parking but the overall availability and the confusing layout of the garages. They said that visitors often get lost trying to find a space or struggle to navigate the payment machines, which frustrates them long before they ever reach the storefronts.

For now, the city hopes the change will encourage longer visits and more foot traffic. Whether it will address the long-standing complaints about downtown access remains to be seen.
