If you think hackers are only after the social media accounts of large companies, think again. Small businesses and everyday users are increasingly becoming targets, with attackers locking owners out of their profiles, posting fraudulent content, or demanding ransom. The Better Business Bureau has issued a set of practical tips to help both organizations and individuals protect themselves and respond effectively when a breach occurs.
For businesses, the first line of defense is enabling two-factor authentication on every account. This extra step, often requiring a code sent to a phone, can block most automated attacks. The BBB also recommends using strong, unique passwords for each platform and changing them regularly. Employees should be trained to recognize phishing attempts, as many hacks start with a fake email that looks like it comes from the social media company itself.
If an account is compromised, the BBB advises acting fast. Report the hack to the platform immediately through its official help center. Change passwords for all linked accounts, especially email and payment services. Then, notify customers and followers about the breach to prevent them from falling for scam posts or messages sent from your account.
For individuals, the same basic rules apply. Avoid clicking on suspicious links, even if they appear to come from a friend. If a friend's account starts sending strange messages, reach out to them through another method to confirm they are not hacked. The BBB also suggests reviewing privacy settings regularly and limiting the amount of personal information shared publicly.
the goal is to stay one step ahead. Hackers rely on complacency, so a few minutes of preventive action can save hours of damage control later.
