The man identified as the leader of a burglary ring that hit multiple businesses in Kansas City's River Market area was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in federal prison. Prosecutors described him as the mastermind behind a series of break-ins that targeted small shops and restaurants, causing significant financial losses and fear among local owners.
The sentencing came after a lengthy investigation that tied the gang to at least a dozen burglaries over several months. Authorities said the group focused on cash registers and safes, often striking in the early morning hours when businesses were closed. The ringleader was convicted on charges including conspiracy to commit burglary and interstate transportation of stolen property.
During the hearing, victims described the emotional and economic toll of the crimes. One business owner said the break-in forced them to close for a week, while another reported losing months of savings. The defendant offered a brief apology before the judge handed down the sentence, which also includes three years of supervised release after prison.
The case is part of a broader effort by local and federal law enforcement to crack down on organized property crime in the downtown area. Police have noted a decline in similar incidents since the gang was dismantled.
