The parents of a 7-year-old boy who weighed 255 pounds have been charged with murder after their son died from heart disease. Authorities say the child was living on a diet of potato chips, French fries, and other unhealthy snacks, with little to no medical care.
Prosecutors described the case as "extraordinary, terrible neglect." The boy's weight was more than four times the average for his age. Medical examiners ruled his death was caused by complications of morbid obesity, specifically heart disease. Court documents allege the parents failed to seek medical attention for their son even as his health deteriorated. They also reportedly continued to feed him high-calorie, low-nutrient foods despite his obvious condition.
The couple faces charges of murder and child abuse. Investigators say the boy had not seen a doctor in years and was not enrolled in school. Neighbors described him as a quiet child who rarely left the home. The case has sparked debate about parental responsibility and the limits of medical neglect laws. If convicted, the parents could face life in prison. The trial is expected to begin later this year.
