Ohio has been named the best state for business in the United States, according to CNBC's 2026 Top States for Business rankings. The network highlighted the state's low operating costs, robust infrastructure, and significant investments in workforce development as key factors behind the win. This marks a major milestone for the Buckeye State, which has been climbing the ranks in recent years after aggressive economic reforms and targeted tax cuts.
Governor Mike DeWine celebrated the announcement, calling it a validation of the state's pro-growth policies. "We focused on creating an environment where businesses can thrive, from cutting red tape to modernizing our transportation networks," he said in a statement. The report specifically praised Ohio's logistics advantages, including its central location and access to major highways and waterways, as well as its growing tech and manufacturing sectors.
Critics, however, note that while the ranking reflects business appeal, it does not fully account for quality-of-life issues like healthcare access or public school funding. Still, economic development officials are optimistic. They point to recent deals with electric vehicle battery plants and semiconductor facilities as proof that Ohio's strategy is working. The state beat out traditional powerhouses like Texas and North Carolina, which took second and third place respectively.
