Florence salon owner reflects on six years in business after opening during pandemic

Opening a new business during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic was a risk many advised against, but a Florence salon owner said faith and determination helped her push through the uncertainty. Now, six years after first unlocking the doors, she is reflecting on the challenges and rewards of building a client base during a time of social distancing and mandatory masks.

The salon, which specializes in cuts, color, and styling, opened in early 2020, just weeks before statewide shutdowns took effect. The owner recalled having to pivot almost immediately to appointment-only scheduling, strict sanitation protocols, and one-on-one services. Many of her early clients were hesitant to return to public spaces, but she credits word-of-mouth and a loyal following from her previous work for keeping the chairs full.

Over the years, the business has weathered supply chain delays, rising product costs, and staffing shortages. Still, the owner said the community support never wavered. Regulars brought in homemade treats, left encouraging notes, and referred friends. She noted that the pandemic forced her to become more creative with marketing and more intentional with customer relationships.

Today, the salon operates at full capacity and has expanded its service menu. The owner said she feels grateful for the rocky start, as it taught her resilience and the value of slow, steady growth. She plans to continue offering personalized service and hopes to mentor other stylists looking to open their own shops. For now, she is simply celebrating the milestone of six years in business, with a focus on the future.
