With forecasts pointing toward a busy wildfire season, Lane County officials are shifting some of their preparedness focus from households to the commercial sector. Emergency managers are now advising business owners to treat their workplaces with the same urgency they would apply to their homes when it comes to fire safety.
The warning comes as dry conditions and low snowpack levels raise concerns across the Pacific Northwest. Officials emphasize that a lack of preparation at a business can have ripple effects beyond the property line. An unmanaged brush pile, an untested sprinkler system, or a missing evacuation plan can slow down first responders and endanger neighboring lots.
County representatives are recommending that companies update their emergency plans now, rather than waiting for a red flag warning. Key steps include clearing defensible space around buildings, checking that fire extinguishers are current, and running drills with employees. For businesses located in the wildland-urban interface, the advice is even more pointed: have a go-kit ready and know your insurance coverage.
The message is clear. Wildfire danger does not stop at the office door, and neither should preparedness.
