A Minnesota small business owner recently appeared on the National Federation of Independent Business's "Small Business Rundown" podcast to urge Congress to eliminate a controversial federal reporting requirement. The episode, which also featured U.S. Representative Brad Finstad, focused on the push to repeal Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting.
The BOI rule, which took effect earlier this year, requires many small business owners to disclose personal details about their company's ownership to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Critics argue the mandate is an unfunded burden that exposes sensitive data and punishes honest entrepreneurs. The Minnesota business owner described the paperwork as confusing and time-consuming, taking hours away from running the company.
Representative Finstad, who represents Minnesota's First Congressional District, has backed legislation to scrap the reporting requirement. During the podcast, he argued that the rule was written with good intentions but fails to target actual financial crime. Instead, he said, it creates a massive database of personal information that could be vulnerable to leaks or misuse. Finstad called the reporting a "federal overreach" that treats every mom-and-pop shop like a potential money launderer.
The discussion comes as a bipartisan group in the House pushes for repeal. Supporters of the rule maintain it helps law enforcement track illicit funds. However, the NFIB and the Minnesota owner contend that the cost of compliance far outweighs the benefits for small firms. The episode is part of a broader campaign to rally opposition before the next filing deadline.
