A Facebook group that began as a simple way to support Black-owned businesses has evolved into a physical community hub, raising over $100,000 in the process. The group, which started with a focus on sharing local recommendations and promoting Black entrepreneurs, has now opened a collaborative space called "The Aux" in Chicago.
The new venue serves as a storefront, event space, and gathering spot for members who once only connected online. Organizers say the transition from a digital support network to a brick-and-mortar location was a natural next step. The Aux allows small business owners to host pop-up shops, workshops, and networking events in a dedicated environment.
Since its founding, the Facebook community has helped direct more than $100,000 in funding to Black-owned businesses through direct purchases, fundraising campaigns, and grant programs. The group's leaders say the physical space will allow them to deepen that impact by offering resources like mentorship, marketing support, and affordable retail access.
The Aux is now open to the public, with plans to host regular events aimed at building economic power within the local Black community. Organizers hope the space will serve as a model for other cities looking to turn online activism into tangible, long-term support.
