WASHINGTON – Today, Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Chair Joni Ernst convened a hearing focused on the unique challenges and opportunities within the pet care economy. The session highlighted the significant growth of this industry and examined ways federal policy can foster its continued expansion.
The hearing, titled "The Growing Small Business Pet Economy," featured testimony from small business owners across the nation who operate grooming services, boarding kennels, pet boutiques, and innovative pet tech startups. Witnesses detailed the regulatory hurdles and financial constraints specific to their sector, particularly in the wake of pandemic-related disruptions and shifting consumer demand.
Ernst emphasized the economic weight of the industry, noting that American pet owners now spend well over one hundred billion dollars annually on their animals. This spending fuels a vast network of predominantly small, Main Street businesses that are integral to local communities. The discussion centered on improving access to Small Business Administration loans, streamlining licensing processes, and ensuring these enterprises can compete fairly in a rapidly evolving market.
"From breeders to trainers to retailers, these small businesses are doing what they love and caring for our beloved pets," Ernst stated. "It’s critical that Washington understands their needs so they can continue to grow and create jobs." The hearing is expected to inform potential bipartisan legislative efforts aimed at providing targeted support to this vibrant segment of the American economy.
