As my daughter prepares to enter high school, I have made the decision to provide her with a "dumb phone" instead of a smartphone. This choice is rooted in my desire to shield her from the distractions and pressures associated with social media and constant connectivity. Her phone will not have access to apps or WiFi, allowing her to communicate through calls and texts without the temptation of online distractions.
In an age where smartphones dominate the teenage experience, I believe that this approach will help her focus on her studies and personal development. High school is a crucial time for building friendships, honing academic skills, and discovering interests. By limiting her access to social media, I hope to encourage her to engage more deeply with her peers and the world around her.
While some may view this decision as restrictive, I see it as a way to empower her to develop healthy habits and prioritize her well-being during these formative years. As she embarks on this new chapter, I am confident that her "dumb phone" will serve her well.
