Boston leads list of best places for foreign businesses in FT-Nikkei ranking

Boston leads list of best places for foreign businesses in FT-Nikkei ranking

The Massachusetts capital has claimed the top spot in the latest FT-Nikkei ranking of the best cities for foreign businesses, edging out last year's winner Tampa. Boston's rise to first place is driven by a highly skilled workforce and a surge in foreign direct investment.

The ranking evaluates cities based on economic potential, business environment, and infrastructure. Boston scored particularly high for its deep talent pool, anchored by world-class universities and research institutions. This concentration of educated workers has attracted multinational companies in biotech, finance, and technology.

Foreign investment into the Boston metro area has climbed steadily over the past two years, with several international firms opening new offices or expanding existing operations. The city's strong healthcare sector and its role as a hub for life sciences have been major draws.

Tampa, which led the list last year, slipped to second place. While the Florida city remains attractive for its lower costs and business-friendly policies, Boston's advantages in innovation and labor quality gave it the edge.

Other top-ranked cities include New York, San Francisco, and Seattle, all benefiting from established international business communities. The ranking highlights a broader trend of foreign companies seeking locations with strong educational infrastructure and access to specialized talent, rather than just low taxes or cheap real estate.
