The Puget Sound Regional Council has released an updated version of its long-range transportation plan for 2050, but critics say the document is built on a shaky foundation. The plan, which is supposed to guide major infrastructure investments across the region, reportedly did not factor in Sound Transit's recent decision to push back key light rail projects under the ST3 program.
Sound Transit announced earlier this year that several planned extensions would be delayed by years due to rising costs, labor shortages, and supply chain issues. The agency cited a multibillion-dollar funding gap that forced it to defer completion dates for lines to Ballard, West Seattle, and other areas. Despite this, the Puget Sound Regional Council's 2050 update still assumes those projects will be finished on the original timeline.
Local transportation analysts have described the omission as a risky oversight. One former planning official called it a case of wishful thinking, noting that failing to adjust the baseline plan means the region is effectively planning for a future that no longer exists. The mismatch could affect everything from housing density projections to federal funding requests.
The council has defended its approach, saying the plan is a high-level vision and that smaller adjustments will be made as projects evolve. But critics argue that ignoring a major agency's own revised schedule undermines the credibility of the entire document. With billions of dollars in taxpayer money at stake, they say the region needs a plan that reflects reality, not hope.
