A 35-year-old man from Throop is facing charges after police say he posted threats on social media to kill State Senator Marty Flynn and a local business owner. Authorities identified the suspect as Michael D. Jones, who was taken into custody without incident on Tuesday.
According to the Throop Police Department, the threats were made in a series of posts on a popular social media platform over the weekend. The posts specifically named Senator Flynn and Steve Masterson, who owns a construction company in the area. Police did not disclose the exact wording of the threats but said they were explicit enough to warrant immediate action.
Investigators traced the account to Jones, who lives in the borough. A search of his home turned up a computer and a smartphone that police believe were used to make the posts. Jones was arraigned on charges of terroristic threats, harassment, and stalking. He is being held at Lackawanna County Prison on $50,000 bail.
Senator Flynn, a Democrat who represents parts of Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, released a brief statement thanking law enforcement for their quick response. Masterson declined to comment. The case is expected to go before a grand jury next month.
