Cardiovascular imaging contrast agent recalled due to risk of contamination

A widely used contrast agent for cardiovascular imaging is being recalled nationwide after routine quality testing found potentially harmful particles in the solution. The manufacturer issued the voluntary recall late Tuesday, advising hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers to stop using the product right away and to quarantine any remaining stock.

The issue was discovered during a standard stability check, where inspectors spotted particulate matter floating in several vials of the injectable dye. While the exact nature of the particles has not been fully identified, the company said they could pose a serious risk if introduced into a patient's bloodstream. Possible complications include local tissue damage, blood clots, or an inflammatory response at the injection site. No adverse events linked to the contaminated batches have been reported so far, but the company is taking no chances.

Customers who have purchased the affected lots are being asked to return all unused vials to the distributor for a full credit. The recall covers specific lot numbers that were shipped to facilities across the country over the past three months. Medical staff are advised to check their inventory against the recall notice and to switch to an alternative imaging agent if available. For patients, the risk is low, since the recall is precautionary and the contaminated vials were likely never used. However, anyone who received an injection from a recalled lot and experiences unusual pain, swelling, or fever should contact their doctor. The company said it is working with regulators to determine how the particles entered the production line and to prevent a similar issue in the future.
